Perfect Presence for Schools

Perfect Presence for Schools

Working with you and your school community in building resilience and well-being that supports engagement in education.

Our evidence-based programs

Woodville Alliance facilitates a range of developmentally appropriate, dynamic evidence-based/evidence-informed group programs that can be tailored to the specific needs of young people. In particular, to enhance emotional wellbeing and cognitive ability to support their individual learning and engagement in school.

Group programs are a platform to open dialogue between young people about certain issues as well as to provide them with skills and abilities to further their resilience in managing life’s challenges and in particular the engagement in school. There is no ‘one size fits all’ model when working with young people from diverse groups.
– We take a strengths-based, inclusive approach when working with students.
– We follow all pre-existing individualised learning pathways, health care plans, school recommendations and have appropriate staff present during sessions to minimise barriers to student participation.
– We work with our partner schools to implement a comprehensive and inclusive strategy to create an environment with clearly defined behavioural expectations.

Some of the programs we offer are:
DRUMBEAT —Discovering relationships using music – beliefs, emotions, attitudes, and thoughts facilitates the social and emotional skills for healthy relationships and values.
Seasons of Growth— Builds the knowledge and skills necessary to strengthen social and emotional well-being following significant loss by exploring the impact of change and loss.
Rock and Water— Provides a pathway to self-awareness, and increased self-confidence and social functioning.
Love Bites—Equips young people with the knowledge needed to have respectful relationships, encourage and develop their skills in critical thinking and assist them able to problem solve and communicate effectively.
Cool Kids -Learning about feelings and anxiety; learning to think more realistically; fighting fear by facing fear (stepladders); and learning other coping skills such as building social confidence or learning to solve problems.
Peaceful Kids—Mindfulness and Positive Psychology-based program to lessen anxiety and stress and increase resilience in children.

Tailored workshops

Woodville can customise workshops to enhance student engagement with learning depending on the needs and motivation of the cohort.

Customised workshops include:
● Regulating emotions
● Body image and self-esteem
● Self-help skills
● Risk-taking
● Problem gaming
● Responsible social media use
● Health and Wellbeing (nutrition, sleep, healthy-eating)
● Anger management
● Mindfulness, meditation, and yoga
● Life skills (budgeting)
● Group project to support the transition back to class
● Cultural awareness (e.g. Aboriginal expert-led “on country” experience)
● Goal setting
● Career “Taster” activities

Celebrating successes

Excursions are a positive program addition to allow students to celebrate their successes and foster connection in the group. These can occur at the beginning and the end of the program.

Breakfast club

By providing breakfast during the morning sessions of our programs, students will be able to focus more clearly and may make more effort to turn up to sessions on time. During this time staff will be able to informally check in
with students before any formal programming takes place. Eating together also provides a “soft entry” to the day for students who find attendance difficult.

Customisation

We can work collaboratively with schools with input from parents/carers to develop individualised goals for students. Through the program, we will evaluate the success of the goals through a rigorous evidence-based evaluation plan. Please contact us if you have any other further needs and we can customise a program and workshops to suit your school, staff or community needs.

Case management

We provide one on one support for families with children aged 0 – 18 years. We meet with children on a ‘one-off’ or a regular basis to help them set some goals based on what the young person requires and help to create plans to reach these goals. We also refer to a more specialised service if that is what is needed too.

Behind the challenges faced by most people struggling to find meaning and focus in their lives are relationship issues; in fact, it is widely agreed that healthy relationships are the building blocks of happy and productive lives.

DRUMBEAT is a flexible program that combines experiential learning with cognitive behavioural therapy and engages young people and adults who may be anxious or resistant to ‘talk based’ therapies. It is a therapeutic program using rhythm, developed by Holyoake to reach alienated young people of those at risk of problematic health and social outcomes.

DRUMBEAT explores relationship issues such as:

  • Peer Pressure
  • Bullying
  • Dealing with emotions
  • Identity
  • Social responsibility
  • Teamwork

DRUMBEAT promotes social understanding and connection through a team drumming experience. It is fun, safe, creative, engaging and rewarding. Participants lift their self-esteem, learn to work cooperatively and are exposed to the therapeutic and recreational benefits of music.

Together for a better community

Together for a better community

By working together with our community, we can make significant improvements to things that matter to us. We believe this must begin with community conversations where we listen to what the community wants.  Out of this listening we partner with residents, non -government and government organisations to build a better future.

2163 Project

During 2018, Woodville Alliance, Fairfield City Council, Smith Family’s Communities for Children Fairfield program and other collaborators – Community First Step, Parks Community Network, TAFE NSW, CORE Community Services and South West Connect focused on engaging with the community of Villawood and Carramar (the 2163 postcode) to better understand the local community, their collective strengths and challenges and their vision for the future. Taking a collective impact approach, the 2163 In Focus project focussed on working authentically with the community to identify strengths and challenges and opportunities for change. The community identified 5 priority areas – Crime and Safety, Drugs, Parks and Public Spaces, Activities for all ages and Bringing us together.

The outcome of the project was a report – 2163 in Focus Summary Report and film about the community living in the 2163 postcode. For a copy of the report or to view the film, click here

What is good mental health?

For most people it is about being able to do the things that allow you to live your life in a satisfying way. For example; being able to work and study, go to school, cope with day to day life stresses.

Children and young people go through many changes as they grow up and sometimes raising sensitive issues and resolving problems along the way can be challenging for them and for their parents or carers. For children and young people, it can be a little more difficult to know if there may be a mental health issue emerging or if the behaviour is normal.

What is the Strong Minds Program?

Click here for a copy of the Woodville Alliance Strong Minds Flyer.

The Strong Minds Program is a free early intervention program for children and young people 0-18 years. We are a team of qualified and skilled case workers, we work with the child, young person, parents or carers, to assess what is happening and what supports and services could be put in place to assist.

Some of the areas we can help with are:

  • Bullying
  • Anxious behaviours
  • Not adjusting to school
  • Managing change
  • Establishing routines in daily life
  • Emotional supports
  • Referral to professionals and other services
  • Parenting support
  • We also run groups at times to strengthen children’s and young people protective factors and to help build resilience. Some of these are; Rhythm to Recovery, Circle of Security, Love Bites, Seasons for Growth, Rock and Water, DRUMBEAT and others.
  • Interpreters are available for our service

How do I get a case worker to help?

A referral form will need to be sent to us to review to make sure we are the right service for you. This can be filled out by the person needing support, parent, carer, school counsellor or a government or non-government support person. Or, talk to us if you want the support for your child or young person, birth to 18 years. Once we have processed the referral, we will be in touch to conduct an assessment so that we can work out together what the plan should be for your child or young person.

Click on the button ‘Case Work Referral’, please attach this completed form and then email to strongminds@woodville.org.au

For more information phone 9724 3807, between Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.

Woodville Alliance helps strengthen good parenting practices. We build on the wisdom parents bring yet can also connect you to highly qualified professionals working from evidence of what is proven to help families.

We often find it helps to work with whole families, including children.  We can also refer you on to a more specialised service if that is what you need too.

FREE Parenting Courses

We run evidence based parenting programs with well qualified and experienced facilitators such as Circle of Security, 123 Magic, Tuning in to Kids, Tuning in to Teens and Bringing up Great kids. These programs provide users -friendly, practical tips for parents based on best practice and research of what works. Often, we provide child care so that parents can attend comfortably, and we offer interpreters if required.
